There was a time, many years ago, when Rotary Clubs routinely held an evening get together for new members to socialize and learn something about the organization they joined. These were pleasant events where spouses and significant others were included with the idea that joining a Rotary club might be thought of as a family affair. Potential members were often included in the process with the hope that the fellowship and information would serve to encourage them to join the group.
These were small informal events that often included a very low key program or discussion regarding one part of what Rotary does. At the end of the evening of conversation with refreshments and deserts the folks who attended would go away with good feelings and a higher level of commitment to the club.
What a deal; you just have to wonder why this great tradition has all but disappeared from the world of Rotary. Maybe it is time to revisit the idea of an evening fireside chat.
