Back to Basics

My Rotary Club recently took a step a step into the bright new world of Social Media by setting up their very own Facebook Page. I am fully aware that we have members who have never looked a Facebook and probably have no intention of starting now. I am also aware that we there are a lot of potential members out there who do spend time on Facebook and may actually stumble across our page.

Keeping in mind that the Object of Rotary says something about, “The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.” And it seems that social media like Facebook would be a perfect place to develop those acquaintances.

In just a few days that this page has been active those who ‘liked’ the page have heard about several birthdays, a few anniversaries of members joining the club and a couple of wedding anniversaries. There are a few pictures of interest; one being of the club members in 1940 and another of the club members 65 years later. Funny thing is all those members seem to have aged very little in the interim, but a few of them are wearing dresses in the more recent version. If you know, Isaac Hung, the current president of the Rotary Club of San Marino you might want to check-out the picture of him on his honeymoon. I wonder if that is the same Celia he is married to today; she doesn’t seem to have aged at the rate he has.

I wonder why more Rotary cubs aren’t getting onboard with this wonderful little piece of technology. Maybe we are concerned that all of those young people might discover what a hip young fun group we really are.
